The National Palace Museum of Korea (Director Jeong Yong-Jae) and the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage will co-host an international conference titled ‘Lost Cultural Heritage: Restoration and Challenges’ on July 10 from 10 AM at the auditorium of the National Palace Museum in Jongno-gu Seoul. The conference will share experiences and discuss future tasks concerning the restoration and utilization of cultural heritage sites damaged by external factors both domestically and internationally.

This academic conference is held in conjunction with the ongoing “Notre-Dame de Paris Augmented Reality Special Exhibition: 860 Years of History in Your Hands” (July 2 - September 1) at the National Palace Museum. Experts involved in the restoration and diverse utilization of cultural heritage sites like Sungnyemun in Korea Notre-Dame de Paris in France and Shuri Castle in Okinawa Japan will participate in presentations and discussions.

The conference will be divided into three main themes with two presenters for each theme. The first session will cover the loss and restoration of cultural heritage featuring:

Restoration of Sungnyemun (Cho Kyu-Hyung Gyeongbokgung Palace Management Office)
Reconstruction of Shuri Castle and the Future of Artifacts (Goki Atsuki Okinawa Churashima Foundation Ryukyu Cultural Heritage Research Department)
The second session will address the restoration and utilization challenges of cultural heritage:

Restoration and Utilization of Palace Architectural Heritage (Cho Eun-Kyung Palaces and Tombs Division)
Notre-Dame de Paris: From Restoration Planning to Museum Establishment (Jonathan Truillet French Ministry of Culture)
The third session will focus on the digital restoration and utilization of cultural heritage:

Digital Restoration of Architectural Cultural Heritage in Korea (Kang Hyun National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage)
Immersive Experience with Histopad (Raphael March Histovery)
Following the presentations there will be a comprehensive discussion chaired by Professor Jeon Bong-Hee of Seoul National University where presenters and discussants will freely exchange opinions with the audience on the restoration and future utilization of cultural heritage.
