When we look at the start-up companies based on Gangwon Province intellectual property that applied for patent last year many companies challenging their businesses with ideas in real life or in area of high demand. Start-up boom during the Covid-19 Gangwon Province is taking attention to the expansion of the technology start-ups

Last year the number of start-ups nationwide increased significantly. According to Statistics Korea the number of start-ups nationwide was 1484667 compared to previous year (1285259) it increased 199408 (15.5%). Gangwon Province was also enthusiastic about start-up booms passing 40000 cases in the crisis of Covid-19 last year. Last year the number of start-ups (41330) in Gangwon Province increased by 5862 (16.5%) compared to the previous year (35468). The highlight part along with the new start-ups foundation was the advance of the technology-based industries. Manufacturing industries taking local characteristics and creativity as advantage are growing more steadily than restaurants and distribution industries. Over the past five years the number of start-ups in the technology-based industries in Gangwon Province has continued to rise every year from 3498 cases in 2016 to 4951 cases last year. The commercialization of patent-based intellectual property (IP) start-ups is also increasing steadily. According to IP Stepping Stone Management Profit announced by Gangwon Intellectual Property Center only two new start-ups and one commercialization partnership were introduced in 2014 but in last year it was 16 new start-ups and and 19 commercialization partnerships which showed the increasing trend.

Now there is necessity to increase the support in increasing supporting policies to boost sales and mid to long term growth for start-ups. According to a survey conducted by the Gangweon Regional SMEsand Startups office on 500 start-up companies which are in the Gangwon Province start-up infra support 56.2 percent were in the early stage of the business which was research and development stage (148 companies 29.6%) and prototypes (133 companies 26.6%). Only 69 companies (13.8%) were commercially available in earnest and the number of companies that produced profits such as product sales and market sales was low-pitched.

Expansion of support for technology-based start-up companies at Gangwon Intellectual Property Center and Gangwon Province

Gangwon Province and the Gangwon Intellectual Property Center are planning to support start-up companies based on technology by implementing the IP stepping stone and IP nare program this year. In order to overcome the damage of Covid-19 the two institutions will provide intensive support for the excavating regional specialized industries by diversifying business based on IP-R&D and promoting export through linked support of exporting SMEs (Cosmetics and medical equipment industries). In order to proliferate share and cooperate economy and for the advancement of the social economy support to the preliminary and social economy companies will be expanded. Lee Mi-sook department manager of BioHealth department in Gangwon Province said Last year 1.28 billion won including national funds was invested to excavate and commercialize ideas of the preliminary founders and provide consulting for early start-up companies in order to promote intellectual property base start-ups. and added This year through the intellectual property rights support we will support preliminary start-up founders having creative ideas to be linked to actual start-up founding.
