The Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism (Minister Yoo In-chon hereinafter referred to as MCST) announced that it will hold the Decoding Korea La Corée Decodée art exhibition at the Grand Palais Immersif in Paris from July 26 (Fri) to August 25 (Sun) in celebration of the 2024 Paris Olympics in collaboration with the Korea Arts Management Service (acting representative Kim Beom-hoon).

Decoding Korea aims to interpret the characteristics of Korea through its art utilizing contemporary expressions such as media art. The exhibition focuses on the complexity and multifaceted nature of Korean society which has undergone rapid changes due to industrialization. It features 18 works from 11 Korean media artists including Nam June Paik Kang Yi-yeon Kwon Ha-yoon Kim Hee-chun Ram Han Roomtone Park Joon-bum Yum Ji-hye Lee Yong-baek Lee Lee-nam and Jung Yeon-doo.

There has been growing interest in Korean art globally with numerous exhibitions highlighting Korean artists in the US and Europe. Korean media art in particular is gaining attention for its technological excellence in AI AR and VR. The works featured in Decoding Korea provide cutting-edge visual experiences and convey the philosophical concerns of contemporary Korean artists offering visitors to Paris during the Olympics a comprehensive understanding of Korea.

Exhibiting Works Exploring Modern Korean Society
The exhibition includes:

Kang Yi-yeons projection mapping Finite emphasizing the ecological interconnection of all elements on Earth.
Kwon Ha-yoons VR work 489 Years rediscovering the ecological value of the Demilitarized Zone.
Lee Yong-baeks Angel Soldier which adorned the Korean Pavilion at the 2011 Venice Biennale.
Jung Yeon-doos Crow’s Eye View inspired by Lee Sangs poem Ogamdo presenting a view of Ulsan from a crows perspective.
Special Exhibition on Nam June Paik
Additionally a special exhibition on Nam June Paik will be held showcasing his experiments in cultural fusion with works like Global Groove and the international satellite broadcast project Wrap Around the World for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Visitors can experience Paiks vision of international solidarity fittingly echoed in the Olympic spirit.

This exhibition is part of the 2024 Korea Season program (www.koreaseason.co.kr) which aims to introduce Korean culture to the world over six months in France starting from May 2. Other highlights include the Korean National Ballets Special Gala (Paris Korea House July 28-29) Korean performance groups participating in the Aurillac Festival (August 14-17) and performances by the Heart Heart Orchestra featuring musicians with developmental disabilities (Salle Gaveau September 7-8).
