Publication of Report on Regular Inspections of 207 National Treasures and Cultural Properties
Includes Regular Inspection Results for 18 National Treasures and 189 Cultural Properties such as the Ten-Story Stone Pagoda at Wongaksa Temple Site in Seoul
The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage under the Cultural Heritage Administration has published the 2023 Report on Regular Inspections of State-Designated Architectural Cultural Heritage. This report encapsulates the results of regular inspections conducted on architectural cultural heritage last year.
Architectural Structures: Refers to wooden stone brick concrete buildings and tombs.
Regular inspections are conducted periodically (every three or five years) to ensure the preventive conservation and management of state-designated cultural heritage. The Safety and Disaster Prevention Research Division of the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage carries out these inspections on architectural cultural heritage. The total number of items inspected is 841 (as of March 31 2024) and this year inspections are being conducted on 211 items.
Inspection Targets (Total 841 items as of March 31 2024): 99 National Treasures (27 wooden 72 stone) 742 Cultural Properties (237 wooden 505 stone).
This report includes the results of regular inspections of 207 state-designated architectural cultural heritages including 18 National Treasures and 189 Cultural Properties such as the Ten-Story Stone Pagoda at Wongaksa Temple Site in Seoul (National Treasure Seoul) the Stupa of State Preceptor Wongjeung at Taegosa Temple in Goyang (Treasure Gyeonggi) the Stone Lantern at Beopjusa Temple in Boeun (Treasure Chungbuk) the Three-Story Stone Pagoda at Baekjangam Hermitage in Silsangsa Temple Namwon (National Treasure Jeonbuk) and the Stele of King Taejong Muyeol in Gyeongju (National Treasure Gyeongbuk).
Inspection Results: Grade A (Excellent) 57% (117 items) Grade B (Minor Repairs) 3% (7 items) Grade C (Close Monitoring) 32% (67 items) Grade D (Detailed Diagnosis) 2% (5 items) Grade E (Repairs) 3% (7 items) Others (Under Repair) 2% (4 items).
Additionally the report includes the preservation status surrounding environment and safety management facilities of the inspected items along with future action plans based on expert reviews in various fields. The inspection results are shared with local governments and other management entities and follow-up actions are currently being implemented.
The report consisting of seven volumes is made publicly available on the Cultural Heritage Administration website (www.khs.go.kr) and the National Heritage Knowledge Portal of the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (https://portal.nrich.go.kr/) for everyone to access and utilize.

The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage will continue to conduct regular inspections to ensure the preventive conservation of National Treasures and Cultural Properties and will actively share the results with the public.
